I was away for a week and suddenly my follower count took a slight dive. There are now tools out there which Tweeps can use to unfollow inactive accounts. You will also find that you get any new followers if you haven’t posted a tweet for a week or so.
Make sure you update your Twitter account everyday. This will keep your account fresh and active, and will ensure you are always in others streams.

Many of the top Twitterati, will automatically follow you back. Plus, users are constantly looking at the Twityerati’s recent follows which ends up giving you quite a bit of reach.
